This year the Harare, Zimbabwe's camp was held at Watershed College in April. Five Hundred twenty-four, 12 to 18 year olds from all economic and ethnic backgrounds came together to learn more about Christ-like living.
This life changing experience seemed a blessing, not just for the young women and men who attended, but also for those who had the opportunity serve in any way. Whether cooking, cleaning the halls, mentoring, teaching or simply being together – it was beautiful to see the youth and their leaders unite in such a positive way, for such a great cause.
“The 'For the Strength of Youth' program is a formula for a standardized life that everyone should envy to live. Emphasis is put on the youth because they are the future generation of the church,” said Elder Walter Chatora of the Third Quorum of Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (mormons) in Southeast Africa.
The miracles surrounding these camps have always been breath taking and this year was no exception. Today, the world is full of poverty and unsettleing events. It is increasingly difficult to raise youth in such an environment. The Church, (mormons), believe that it is very important to teach their youth the very basics of the gospel of Jesus Christ; the blessings that come from pressing forward, feasting upon the words of Christ and enduring to the end.
The goal of this camp was to teach youth that a meaningful life, full of true joy and happiness, is possible through righteous living. Wickedness never was happiness. These are perilous times and the youth find themselves in incredibly difficult circumstances that require a strong and fervent testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to overcome.
“I loved the camping. It was such an amazing experience. I had fun and I also learned a lot. I am a better person today because of what I have learned. I will choose the harder right always,” said one youth from Domboshava.
“I have no doubt in the safety and future of the Church because of the well informed youth who participated in the For the Strength of Youth activity in Harare,” said Marimba Stake Public Affairs Director Tawanda Chitenda.
For the Strength of Youth: Changing the lives of young men and young women and they changing the world for the better.
