Face Lift for "Wings of Grace" Orphanage

Latter-Day Saint (LDS) Charities, a program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, recently gave Wings of Grace Orphanage in Mufakose, Harare a 'face lift'. Improvements included painting the interior and exterior walls, putting new electrical wiring, windows, doors, fence around the yard and repairing the roof, among other things.

The refurbishment also included remodeling the kitchen by putting new tiles on the floors and walls, new cooking appliances, and electrical outlets. The bathroom was remodeled and new tiles, toilet, and shower were installed.

Speaking at the occasion, Honorable Member of Parliament Sabina Thembani and the local Counselor Moffat Alison, spoke with one voice commending the work done by LDS Charities and urged churches and the corporate world to emulate the LDS Charities by taking a leading role in helping the less fortunate population of our society.

“What LDS Charities has done is commendable. There is need for churches and the corporate sector to assist the government in helping the vulnerable and the disadvantaged,” he said.

Officially receiving the handover of the work done, Ms. Winnet Gwanzura from the orphanage expressed her heartfelt gratitude and thanked LDS Charities for helping them.

“We thank the Almighty for sending LDS Charities to this place. We are very grateful for the work they have done. Our children now have a decent place they call home and can safely move around and play with joy and smiles on their faces,” she said.

The Orphanage, which was established in 1987 and houses more than 65 children, had become dilapidated, with the floors, sanitary system and general look of the orphanage leaving much to be desired.

The four-roomed Wings of Grace Orphanage is owned by a widow and cares for 65 orphans. 20 of the children live permanently at the home and the additional 45 are placed into nearby homes for sleeping quarters. They are clothed and fed at the orphanage each day.
